🥃 Some Bourbons Are Rare... Others Are Just Overhyped

💥 Opening Pour

Last Thursday, I watched three grown men power-walk through a liquor store because somebody whispered, “The allocated bottles just hit the shelf.” 😅🥃

One guy grabbed a bottle like he was recovering a lost family heirloom. Another walked out empty-handed looking like his dog had just filed for divorce.

That’s the strange world of allocated bourbon. Some bottles vanish in minutes. Others sit quietly collecting dust.

📖 The Story

Allocated bourbon sounds mysterious.

Like there’s a secret bourbon council meeting inside a candle-lit rickhouse somewhere in Kentucky. 🕯️🥃

But the truth is simple.

“Allocated” just means stores only get a small amount of certain bottles.

That scarcity creates excitement.
Excitement creates hype.
And hype creates chaos.

I once stood beside a fellow in Louisville who had camped outside a liquor store for four straight hours in cold rain waiting for a bottle of Blanton's.

I asked him, “Is it your favorite bourbon?”

He paused. Looked at me seriously.

Then said:

“Never had it.”

And there it was. The entire bourbon world in one sentence. 😂

Some allocated bottles truly deserve the madness. Older stock. Rare barrels. Incredible flavor.

But other bottles? They’re mostly riding reputation like a country singer riding one hit song.

Meanwhile, some of the best whiskey on earth is sitting quietly on shelves because:

  • The label isn’t flashy

  • Influencers ignore it

  • It’s actually available

  • Nobody made a viral TikTok about it 😅

An old distiller friend of mine, Chuck Adams, once leaned across a tasting table and told me:

“Son, some folks collect labels instead of flavor.”

That line hit harder than barrel proof.

Because the best bourbon isn’t always the hardest one to find.

Sometimes the real treasure is the bottle nobody’s fighting over.

And that, my friend, is the reveal most whiskey hunters learn too late. 🥃

🍹The Art of Mixing

The Midnight Revolver 🥃🌙

A rich bourbon cocktail built for slow jazz, porch lights, and bad decisions made carefully.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz high-proof bourbon

  • 0.5 oz black walnut liqueur

  • 0.25 oz maple syrup

  • 2 dashes chocolate bitters

  • Orange peel

Instructions

  • Add bourbon, walnut liqueur, maple syrup, and bitters into a mixing glass with ice

  • Stir slowly for 20 seconds

  • Strain into a rocks glass over one large cube

  • Express orange peel over the glass and drop it in

Tip: Use a bold bourbon with strong oak notes. This drink likes whiskey that punches back. 🔥

🍖 Flavor Pairing Picks

Pair it with:

🍗 Smoked brisket — The pepper bark and smoke match beautifully with deep oak-heavy bourbon

🍑 Grilled peaches with brown sugar — Sweet fruit softens the proof while pulling forward caramel notes

💨 Arturo Fuente Hemingway — Earthy tobacco and cedar pair perfectly with older whiskey spice

🧠 Big Lesson of the Week

Rare does not always mean better.

The smartest whiskey drinkers chase flavor first and hype second.

Because the goal isn’t owning the bottle everyone wants. The goal is loving the pour in your glass. 🥃

🥂 Final Toast

To the bottles worth chasing, the pours worth sharing, and the wisdom to know the difference. 🥃

🥃 Repeatable Proverb

A rare bottle gets attention. A great bottle gets emptied.

P.S. Friday, I’m telling the story of the bourbon bottles that used to sit untouched on bottom shelves before the bourbon boom turned them into liquid gold. Some of these price jumps are absolutely wild. 👀🔥
